Volunteers
There are
a wide range of opportunities within Sheffield Youth
Offending Service for volunteers to gain experience,
understanding and knowledge of the work within the
YOS, help young people, and benefit the community as a
whole.
Sheffield YOS is always looking for new volunteers and
currently has over 100. Our volunteers come forward
for a variety of reasons including seeking a career
change or wanting to gain knowledge and experience to
enhance their career prospects. Others may have
retired and are looking to put something back into the
community. Our volunteers come from all backgrounds
and walks of life and each bring their own special
skills and attributes to the team and play a crucial
role in preventing re-offending in Sheffield and
safeguarding young people.
The roles available for volunteers within the service
are wide and varied:
Appropriate Adults
AA’s support young people who are arrested by the
police where no parent, carer or other adult is
willing or available to attend the police station to
ensure the young person’s welfare is looked after.

Community Panel Members
When a young person appears in the youth court for the
first time and pleads guilty they are normally
sentenced to a
referral order. This means the young person
is referred to a youth offender panel consisting of
two trained volunteers and a YOS officer. The
parent/carer of the young person and the victim of the
offence may also attend. The panel agree a contract
with the young person with the aim of repairing the
harm caused by the offence and preventing
re-offending.

Mentors
The mentors’ role is to act as a positive role model
for young people. You will need to build a trusting
relationship with a young person over a period of six
months where you may act as an advocate, help them
with basic skills or accessing careers services, or
help them make constructive use of their leisure
time. For more information,

Other volunteering options are also available including working with young people on victim awareness and also with literacy and numeracy.
If you

relate to young people, and wish to develop your own
