Prevention > SNAs/NAGs
Safer Neighbourhood Areas (SNAs) are
one of Sheffield’s responses to tackling
neighbourhood priorities,
such as anti-social behaviour, in
partnership
with the local community.
There are 10 Safer Neighbourhood Areas (SNAs) across
Sheffield each managed by a Police Inspector and
supported by smaller localised Safer Neighbourhood
Teams (SNTs) made up of Sergeants, PCs and Community
Support Officers.
The SNTs, split into a North Team and
South Team, have been established by the Council and
the Police to tackle anti-social behaviour and
low-level crime at a local level. The Council's
contribution to this approach is to provide Safer
Neighbourhoods Officers for each of the 10 Safer
Neighbourhood Areas. The teams also support
Sheffield's Local Area Agreement (LAA), which
intends to prevent and deter anti-social behaviour
and address quality of life issues, particularly
neighbourhood nuisance. A key aim is to provide a
focal point for local problems within communities.
In addition, the SNAs are strengthened by
professionals from partner agencies, such as the
Council’s Safer Neighbourhoods Officers, who are
responsible for tasking local authority resources to
tackle neighbourhood priorities. The Safer
Neighbourhoods Area Inspectors, the Police teams and
the Safer Neighbourhoods Officers work closely with
colleagues from Council Service Areas, such as
Sheffield Youth Offending Service, Sheffield Homes,
Sheffield Futures, Neighbourhood Watch and other
agencies, to gather evidence to solve issues and
prevent area problems re-occurring. The relationship
between the SNAs and YOS is crucial as it is
essential that youth focused services link to, and
are supported by, SNAs on a local level to provide
the widest possible range of interventions in order
to effectively tackle community issues.
This concentration of resources within the heart of
neighbourhoods seeks to empower communities and
ensure that people have confidence in raising and
tackling issues which affect their quality of life.
The aim is to find long-term
solutions with the help of the local community.
Each SNA hosts at least one
Neighbourhood Action
Group (NAG) that is made up of representatives from
South Yorkshire Police, Council Service Areas
(including the Youth Offending Service), Sheffield
Homes, representatives from the voluntary sector,
local people, Councillors and many others. These NAGs provide a forum for discussion and decision on
action on issues of concern to the local community.
