Community Reparation – Restorative Work in Sheffield

Sheffield Youth Offending Service, in partnership with local voluntary organisation Remedi (Restorative Justice and Mediation Service), provide the city with a Community Reparation Programme that will have a lasting positive impact on Sheffield

Reparation is an important part of the work the youth offending service do with a young person and plays a leading role in their rehabilitation process.

Supervision and Health & Safety
A group of trained supervisor’s provide a positive role model for the young people and ensure that Health and Safety and risk assessments are carried out for all the placements we use.

Throughout the city we have over 40 community reparation placements varying from luncheon clubs to conservation work – libraries to farm work (right).

These placements include partnership working with community groups, charities, other local authority departments and not for profit organisations. (See the map of Sheffield for further information on placements in your community assembly area)

"Reparation is a great example of how Sheffield Youth Offending Service is committed to ensuring young people make amends for their actions, direct to the people and the communities their offence has affected.  A lot of work we do with young people goes unseen by the general public but reparation is different – it is young people out in the community making a positive impact on areas affected by crime."

Andy Peaden, Senior Manager, Sheffield Youth Offending Service

Benefits of reparation

  • Reparation benefits the victim and/or the local community and can provide reassurance as to the young person’s future offending behaviour.
  • Where possible, (and if desired by the victim) reparation should provide a direct service to the victim to repair the harm caused by the offence. Reparation should also wherever possible, be tailored to the needs of the individual case and the victim’s wishes.
"Action for Stannington is exactly the kind of grassroots initiative which is proving to be really effective in keeping young people out of trouble. This sort of initiative is often more effective than top down government targets and announcements because local people themselves are in charge I was delighted to have the chance to see for myself the excellent work being done."

Nick Clegg MP, Liberal Democrat Leader - Action for Stannington (reparation placement)
